Hello Arno,
Just ran across your article “the older the better”. Great read for a newbie such as myself. I grew my own Virginia this year, first time ever raising tobacco. I’m a transplant myself form Virginia to South Dakota about 20 years ago. Crop grew fantastic in South Dakota, major problem was wind but I overcame that with a wind break. Hung and air dried in old barn, fermented in rolls hung in my wife’s greenhouse. Made a press and bricked the leaves, cut bricks with a new meat slicer, re-bricked it, re-shredded again with meat slicer. Re-bricked again for storage for aging. Flavored some with Rum, Light Rum, Organic peach extract all of which was kept separated while processing. I saved the bulk of it as unflavored though. I will definitely follow your lead with aging the bricks in mason jars. By the way I made my brick forms so that the finished bricks fit nicely into the quart jars. Like I said, great article, thoroughly enjoyed it. Looking forward to finding and reading more from you. Can’t wait to try out my own next year. Looking forward to next years growing season also. Happy Holidays my friend!!!
