hi arno,
let me start off by saying how much i enjoy your blog. your interest in pipe and tobacco history, your diligence in pursuing details, your general enthusiasm, and your skill at writing all make it a pleasure to read.
so please don’t take offense if i comment on your post about bengal slices. several of the facts embedded in the history of the blend appeared to me to be drawn from my paper on dating sobranie tins. if that’s not the case, i apologize. if it is, then i would ask in future that you acknowledge my work with a passing reference embedded in the post. i worked pretty hard to create that paper, tracking down many documents lost to time, and interviewing people throughout the industry (including former high level personnel at gallaher and sobranie). it seems fair to me for that to be acknowledged. part of the problem with the internet is that anything that is posted becomes reposted and reposted again with the greatest of ease. and so something that appears on a blog, then appears somewhere else (in the case the kansas city newsletter), and so on and on. ultimately nobody any longer knows or cares where the work came from.
let me be clear. i’m not asking that anything be corrected this time around, either on your site or in the kc newsletter. i am asking that should you write again on a subject that draws upon my primary research you reference it.
many thanks for your understanding,
jon guss
