Hello Arno
I am Johannes. I write to you from Lisbon, Portugal to ask you for advice and guidance.
Before I tell you my story, I have to confess that I am often left with envy when I read the descriptions of your smoking experiences. Even though I love experiencing new place and taking in great views, I would not mind being locked into your tobacco cellar with a pipe or two and a enough matches to hand.
I started smoking pipe some 30 years ago, but it didn’t last long, however, a little more than a year ago I found myself mature enough to rekindle the pleasure and ritual. At this time I am exploring Virginia and Perique blends. And I love rubbing out flakes.
Since I resumed smoking pipe tobacco, I have converted one cigarette smoker and he too reads your blog. Adam, however, seems to be more obsessed with buying pipes, whereas I am more concerned with exploring tobacco.
It is for this reason that I now write to you for advice and guidance.
Here in Portugal we are able to buy and smoke nothing other than tobacco that “can kill a rat”. This last weekend we found ourselves in Mertola, Alentejo in an old convent with arable land that our Dutch friends, the Zwanekken’s own. So, we are sitting there in the sweltering heat, me sipping at my pipe and the rest gulping the coldest of wines, when Geraldine (the matriarch) informed us that tobacco needs to be grown at the Convento for family and friends (this includes me of course).
Naturally I immediately told Geraldine about THE Dutch pipe smoker and as a result I was tasked with doing the initial ground work so we can start planting, growing, harvesting, curing or whatever method of preparation for blending our own tobacco is necessary …personally, I am jumping at the bit.
Now having said all of the above, I am going to stop here and leave you to reflect and decide whether you find yourself in a position to share your knowledge and experience with us.
I look forward to hearing from you.
With kind regards and my very best wishes.
Johannes
p.s. I like the way you write Arno.
